The Pedro Arrupe Writing Challenge at Arrupe Jesuit High School provides students with the opportunity to articulate their personal values and beliefs through writing. It encourages students to reflect on how their Jesuit Catholic education has shaped their perspectives and principles. The writing process takes place in both the student's English and Theology classes and students can choose to enter the writing challenge. We are excited to announce that this year a record number of students entered PAWC. overall, the challenge aims to foster a community of writers within the school, promoting self-examination and exploration of one's identity as a Jesuit Catholic individual. By recognizing writers at Arrupe Jesuit and encouraging narrative skill development, the challenge contributes to the holistic development of students within the community.
The competition itself is made possible by the generous support of the Zimmerman Family Foundation which provides the top three winners with prizes and scholarship money. Additionally, with the help of 70+ dedicated volunteers who meticulously read and graded the essays three winners earned first, second and third place. This grading process underscores a collaborative effort within the school community to nurture student expression and growth.
In February, our school and community came together for the 2024 Pedro Arrupe Writing Challenge Celebration. The afternoon began with a luncheon and then John Micich, the PAWC Director, set the stage for an afternoon filled with appreciation and recognition.
As the programming started, the room took a moment to express sincere gratitude to the Zimmerman family for their support of Arrupe Jesuit, underscoring the importance of their contribution to our community. As the festivities continued, we turned our attention to the heart of the event—acknowledging the students who placed in the top 10 spots in the contest. They were invited to step forward and share their inspiring essays with the audience. Each presentation was met with applause and admiration, showcasing the talent and dedication of our students. Amidst the applause and shared moments of inspiration, the celebration served as a reminder of the power of unity within our school and community. Once again, congratulations to the student winners, and thank you to the English and Theology Departments, the event volunteers, and the Zimmerman Family Foundation for making the event possible.
