We’re thrilled to spotlight Diego, a standout senior at Arrupe Jesuit High School whose academic excellence, leadership, and perseverance have earned him both an ACE Scholarship and the prestigious Daniels Fund Scholarship. This fall, Diego will be heading to Yale University, where he plans to study Psychology and Computer Science—a path forged through determination, deep-rooted faith, and a heartfelt commitment to making his family proud.
Q: What does receiving the Daniels Scholarship mean to you?
“To receive the Daniels Scholarship is the catalyst of my educational and professional career beyond high school. Thanks to the Daniels Fund's generosity, I will be able to dedicate myself more fully to increasing both my intellectual and social capabilities to a level I wouldn't have been able to without their support.”
Q: What’s a moment from your childhood that still shapes how you see the world today?
“A conversation I had with my mom on the first day of second grade still sticks with me. She told me there are two kinds of people in the world—leaders and followers—and that I needed to be a leader. That has stayed with me ever since.”
Q: Who or what has been a constant source of strength or inspiration in your life?
“My mom and dad. They’ve always been the people I want to make proud because of how much they’ve sacrificed for me and my brothers to have better opportunities.”
Q: Looking back, what challenge or turning point has defined your path the most?
“Failing my 6th grade math class was a big turning point. I had to decide whether to give up or push harder. That experience taught me the value of hard work and determination, and it changed how I approach every challenge.”
Q: What’s a value your family has passed down that you carry with you daily?
“My parents always said, ‘You have to meet God halfway.’ That mindset shapes how I live and how I show up every day.”
Q: How has your time at Arrupe helped you better understand who you are?
“Arrupe helped me grow in my faith and become more self-aware. I’ve learned how to listen, understand different perspectives, and stay humble. Being in a community where people come from similar backgrounds but still want to see you succeed has been so grounding.”
Q: What legacy do you hope to leave behind at Arrupe?
“I want to inspire others to follow their dreams—no matter the obstacles. And when they succeed, I hope they stay humble and lift others up, too.”
Q: If you could describe Arrupe in one word, what would it be?
“Family.”
Throughout his time at Arrupe, Diego has completed placements with Baceline, Colorado School of Mines, Kiewit, and Aspect Energy through the Corporate Work Study Program-gaining valuable real-world experience and demonstrating the same dedication, curiosity, and leadership that define his academic journey. We’re incredibly proud of Diego and can’t wait to see how he continues to grow and give back as he begins this exciting new chapter at Yale University. His story is a reminder that with faith, hard work, and the right support, anything is possible.
