Arrupe Jesuit High School is proud to feature Austin Mernagh, a dedicated Social Studies and Theology teacher, member of the Academic Support staff, and Co-Head Coach for Cross Country and Track. With a passion for education and a commitment to his students' holistic growth, Austin exemplifies the values and mission of Arrupe Jesuit.
Austin grew up in Wichita, Kansas, in a family deeply rooted in education and athletics. Both his parents were teachers and high school coaches, and their influence played a pivotal role in shaping his career path. He spent much of his childhood in their classrooms and gyms, watching them build strong communities and celebrate the successes of their students and athletes. "Their love for their work left a lasting impression on me," he reflects.
This foundation was further solidified during Austin’s time at Benedictine College, where he majored in Secondary Education in Social Studies and minored in Theology. As a member of the college’s Track and Field team for all four years, he learned discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—values that continue to inform his teaching and coaching philosophy. A close friend encouraged him to take an Intro to Education class, and from that moment, he knew he wanted to become a teacher. The supportive faculty and peers in the Education Department at Benedictine inspired him to grow daily and serve his students in meaningful ways.
Austin’s desire to work with high school students began in college when he spent summers as a counselor at a Catholic summer camp. "I discovered how much I enjoyed helping high school students on their faith journeys," he recalls. "Seeing them grow in their faith and as young adults navigating today’s world was incredibly fulfilling." This experience ignited his passion for guiding students during such a formative period in their lives.
After graduating, Austin moved to Denver and began his teaching career at St. Therese Catholic School in Aurora, Colorado. It was there that he first learned about Arrupe Jesuit High School. "Many of our 8th-grade students chose Arrupe for their high school education," Austin says, and this connection eventually led him to join the Arrupe community.
Now in his second year at Arrupe Jesuit, Austin’s role is as dynamic as it is impactful. In addition to teaching Social Studies and Theology, he serves as a member of the Academic Support staff and Co-Head Coach for both the Cross Country and Track teams. These roles allow him to connect with students both in and outside the classroom.
For Austin, the interconnected nature of teaching and coaching is one of the most rewarding aspects of his work. "I find immense joy in seeing students confidently present in class or achieve personal bests on the track," he says. "These moments highlight how resilience and determination transcend both academics and athletics, helping students realize their full potential."
Throughout his journey, Austin’s parents have been his greatest inspiration. "They pushed me to become the best version of myself while allowing me the freedom to pursue my passions," he explains. Their sacrifices, dedication, and encouragement laid the groundwork for his own approach to teaching and coaching. "They were my first teachers and coaches, modeling patience, selflessness, and a deep commitment to others. Their example continues to guide how I support and inspire the students and athletes I work with today."
As a Co-Head Coach, Austin emphasizes the importance of building a supportive and inclusive community for his athletes. "Our goal isn’t just about winning races but fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging students to push themselves beyond what they thought was possible," he explains. He finds fulfillment in celebrating milestones with his athletes, whether it’s a personal best time or the confidence to tackle a new challenge. "It’s those moments of growth that matter most."
Austin also values how coaching strengthens relationships with students outside the classroom. "It allows me to see another side of them, and it gives them the chance to see me as someone who genuinely cares about their success, both on and off the track," he says.
At the heart of Austin’s teaching philosophy is his commitment to helping students grow both intellectually and spiritually. "My hope is to help students navigate today’s challenges with confidence, integrity, and faith," he shares. In his Theology classes, Austin aims to create a space where students feel safe exploring their beliefs and asking big questions. "Seeing students grow in their faith while also developing a deeper understanding of themselves and the world is incredibly rewarding."
Austin’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship, community, and faith in shaping lives. His dedication to Arrupe’s mission ensures that each student he teaches or coaches has the opportunity to grow into their best self—a mission that resonates deeply with the values he learned from his own family. Through his work, Austin Mernagh exemplifies the spirit of Arrupe Jesuit High School, where education, faith, and community come together to transform lives.
