We’re proud to spotlight Giselle Martinez Lazalde, a senior at Arrupe Jesuit High School whose quiet strength, deep faith, and self-awareness have shaped her journey and inspired those around her. A graduate of Assumption Catholic School and an ACE Scholar, Giselle has gained hands-on experience through her Corporate Work Study placements at Mile High Early Learning, Julia Temple, Eon Health, and Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue. This fall, she plans to attend DU, Marquette, or DePaul to continue her path of growth and reflection.
Q: What’s a moment from your childhood that still shapes how you see the world today?
“I remember being a very shy and quiet girl growing up. During recess, I would sit by myself and watch the other kids playing. Even now, I often find myself observing the people around me. I think about how everyone is living their own story with their own thoughts and experiences. That perspective helps me stay grounded and empathetic.”
Q: Who or what has been a constant source of strength or inspiration throughout your life?
“A constant source of strength has always been God. I was raised with faith, but over time, I formed my own relationship with Him. In moments of doubt or difficulty, I find peace in knowing that there is someone greater who already has it all figured out.”
Q: Looking back, what challenge or turning point has defined your path the most?
“Sophomore year was a big turning point. Struggles I had pushed aside began to impact my mental health. With the help of a school counselor, I started facing them. Journaling helped me understand and express what I was going through, and I began to rebuild stronger relationships with my parents and siblings. That season taught me to embrace all of life, the joy and the challenges.”
Q: What’s a value or lesson your family has passed down that you carry with you every day?
“Faith and the importance of family. My faith is personal, something I carry within me. And I always think about how my family’s love and support go with me wherever I go. What I accomplish is never just for me. It is for them too.”
Q: How has your time at Arrupe helped you better understand who you are and where you come from?
“Arrupe gave me a safe space to be myself. The staff and environment helped me open up and grow without feeling like I had to hold back. Theology classes especially encouraged us to interpret things personally and connect with our culture and roots.”
Q: If you could describe Arrupe in one word, what would it be?
“All-in-one.”
Throughout her four years at Arrupe, Giselle has grown into a reflective, grounded, and compassionate young woman. From recognizing the strength in vulnerability to holding tight to her values of faith and family, she has embraced her full self and inspired others to do the same. As she heads off to college, we are confident she will carry that same heart and insight into everything she does next.
