Arrupe Jesuit Student Spotlight: Cristian Ramirez

Meet Cristian Ramirez, a remarkable student entering his senior year at Arrupe Jesuit High School. His story provides a glimpse into the life of a young man determined to make a difference in the Arrupe Jesuit community and is inspired by the values instilled by his parents.

Cristian comes from a vibrant and supportive family. He has three brothers: an 18-year-old older brother and two younger siblings, aged 11 and 3. His parents, originally from Mexico, have played significant roles in shaping his outlook on life. Currently, his father works for a cleaning company called DCPS, allowing his mother to devote her time to taking care of the youngest sibling. This family dynamic has imparted a sense of responsibility and gratitude in Cristian, qualities that are evident in his approach to life and education.

Cristian's educational journey began at Ricardo Flores Magon Academy (RFMA), a middle school close to Regis University. Growing up in this small yet impactful community laid a strong foundation for Cristian’s academic and personal development. The decision to attend Arrupe Jesuit High School was influenced by various factors, including recommendations from mentors like Luis Salas, his former soccer coach and current Operations Manager at Arrupe Jesuit. Mr. Salas highlighted the supportive environment of Arrupe Jesuit which resonated with Cristian and his family.

One of the defining aspects of Cristian’s high school experience has been his participation in the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). This program provides students with valuable work experience, setting them apart from their peers. Cristian has had diverse placements through CWSP, each contributing to his growth and perspective.

Cristian’s first placement was at SAME Cafe, a nonprofit organization which creates community through access to healthy food.  This experience was eye-opening for Cristian, as it brought him closer to those in need and instilled a deep sense of gratitude. Working with this organization helped him appreciate the importance of community service and the impact one can have by giving back.

During his sophomore and junior year Cristian worked at Marathon Petroleum in the legal department, where he conducted research on gas lines and oil lines. This role provided insight into the legal profession and the complexities involved. His junior year saw him transition to the contracts department, where he summarized contracts and managed COIs (Certificates of Insurance). This position taught him about the intricacies of corporate operations and the importance of meticulous attention to detail.

Cristian’s adaptability and willingness to embrace new challenges have been key to his success in these roles. He values the lessons learned from each placement and recognizes the opportunities they have provided for personal and professional development.

Looking ahead to college, Cristian has set his sights on studying business. He dreams of owning his own business and building one for his father as well. This aspiration is deeply rooted in his desire to repay his father for the sacrifices made for their family. Cristian is considering several universities, including Loyola University Chicago, Santa Clara University, and Regis University, where his older brother is currently on a full scholarship. Wherever he ends up, Cristian is committed to pursuing his business ambitions and making a positive impact.

Cristian has already taken steps towards his entrepreneurial goals by starting a landscaping business in the summer of 2023. Partnering with a real estate agent, this venture was a significant step out of his comfort zone, and he is preparing to continue and expand his efforts in the summer of 2024. The experience has been challenging but rewarding, providing him with valuable insights into the realities of entrepreneurship.

Cristian’s story is a testament to the power of hard work and community support. His experiences at Arrupe Jesuit High School and through the CWSP have equipped him with skills and perspectives that will serve him well in his future endeavors. As he stands on the brink of his senior year, Cristian reflects on the journey that has brought him here. He is proud of his achievements and the person he has become, and he is excited for what the future holds. His story is an inspiration to his peers and a reminder of the impact that education, community, and perseverance can have on a young person’s life.

As he continues to pursue his dreams, there is no doubt that Cristian will make significant contributions to the world, driven by the values and experiences that have shaped his journey so far.
